FIELD work: science + art in action

Dear Families and Friends,

Fifth graders led the way this morning, connecting South School’s first graders to the big outdoors at Wheeler Bay. Taking charge of a checklist of descriptors that provoked close looking, older students were the experts – pointing out what they’d noticed. First graders didn’t miss a thing, gathering items of interest to use as inspiration for art later on.

In small groups kids looked for objects of specific color, size, and texture, as well as creatures crawling and in flight. Sensitive to what was underfoot or close by, every student was thrilled to have the chance to be out in the wild. Today we were fortunate. Kids witnessed geese and ducks and evidence of the paths deer had taken through fields. They saw fungi, flowers  lingering on, lichen, and seed pods. They trekked alongside marshlands, through woods, and grassy fields.












Once back as a whole group, fifth graders taught their buddies to observe and draw. Then they turned their own on-site observations into interpretive postcards. Art helped them dig deeper into their field experience.















By the end of the morning, kids were transformed. Tuned into both one another and the natural world, they’d become connected. Back in classrooms tomorrow, children’s ideas will blossom further as they take the form of more complex representations.

This program would not be possible without the incredible support of Maine Community Foundation. Recognizing the value of collaboration, they foresaw the possibilities that relationships between older and younger kids can bring.

  1. What a wonderful narrative that catches what the students, teachers , bus drivers, parents and chaperones learn and take away from nature that’s right under our eyes.
    These students help the adults once again “see” what we used to see when we were their ages!
